For some reason when I freeze or turn off a layer (in this case in a xref), save the drawing, then reopen it, the layers don't stay frozen/off. Could there there be a setting that somehow got changed? Any other suggestions? I've tried saving the drawings with a different name, no dice.

Hi Trooper, Welcome to the forum. Now lets get down to business...Does this only happen with layers with xrefs on or on other layers?
Try going to Tools/Options then under the open and save tab under external references check the 'retian changes to xref layers' is selected.
    Hope this helps.

Or type in VISRETAIN at the command line and change it to 1

"Retain changes to xrefs" was unchecked, that fixed it. What does 'visretain' do, same thing? Seems like I've been there in the past, been a while since I last dealt with Acad... Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.
