Default viewports - how to not display new entities?

I'm using AutoCad 2006 and have a question about viewports. I know you can freeze certain layers from showing up in current and new viewports, but is there a way to lock a viewport from showing new entities being drawn on existing layers in model space. I have a drawing, I would like to keep it in the original version for reference, but would like to modify it as needed without changing the original. I could always make a copy of the drawing, but was curious if there was a way to make this happen. Thanks in advance.

To my knowledge it is not possible, but i could be wrong.
My suggestens would be to make a new Layer (name it similar to the original one you wanted to draw on in the 1st place) and freeze it , draw the new entities in Paperspace or like you said make a copy of the drawing.

I am sure there are other ways too that i am not aware of.

I'm also Fairly positive that there is not any way to do this.
However that is what layers are for. I would take Cp's advice and just create a new layer that is very similar to the orginal layer then freeze
    in all VPORTS.

You could create a lisp for this though (probably one out there already)

AutoCAD 2008 has the Layer Evaluation tool that allows you to manage this. Gotta update your software.
