Greetings from Scotland (an Electrical question)

Hi all,
Brand new to Autocad so expect some silly questions .
My employer just put me on a 2 day beginners course for Autocad LT 2009.
Really enjoyed it and would like to further my knowledge/experience.
My background is electrical and I will probably be making electrical additions to drawings which have already been made up. I'm not sure if I will need Autocad Electrical yet.
My question is will my limited knowledge of Autocad LT be of any use if I get Autocad Electrical or are the two totally different ?

They are related so not totally different. You don't need electrical to do electrical work. It has a lot of nice things, like automatic wire numbering and bill of materials generation but whether that justifies the difference in cost is debatable. There is a separate section here (under "verticals") but it is very low traffic. We are getting a(nother) demo of it in a couple of weeks but I doubt if we will get it.

and just to throw a spanner in the works there are other electrical packages out there that may be worth considering instead

I use autocad for the same reason been doing it fo a while now and learn everything my self, with the help from this site i might add lol, I havnt used the electrical version of autocad but am I right in thinking its only for the electronic side of electrical work ?, I know MEP version is really good but my boss wont spring for that

Get a free 30-day trial version of AutoCAD Electrical and try it out. Here's a link:

Now you can compare the two and decide, along with your boss, whether or not it makes sense to stick with LT or switch to the full package. Remember...it's going to cost you.

Remark AutoCAD Electrical trial is not available in the uk, the company don't like given anyone else in the world a free trial for some reason lol
