When you say "specified layers" what exactly do you mean?

When applying dimensions to the drawing how can you get the dimensions to come in with the specified layers rather than the drawings current layer.
I believe it is something connected with mapping is this correct?

Well...you can have a specific layer for dimensions. Then set your dimension style (lines and text) to be by-layer. You can set your dim style to have a specific color for text and/or lines, so say you want the dim lines to be red with white text - you can set this in your dim style and no matter what layer you are on they will be red and white. Is this what you mean??
