Link constraints sending my model parts haywire!!

Hi guys, i have a manipulator that I wish to use link constraints with.

Much in the vein as the many robotic arm tutorials that you can find on the internet, accept this is originally a step file.

The file imports fine into max, no bother. Acept which i try and assign a link constraint to the claws of the arm. The fingers seem to suddenly position themselves near the base of the model or around it. This happens for many of the components when i try to add a link constraint to them.

Im guessing this may have something to do with the centre of the object but im not entirely sure.

If anyone could shed some light It would be greatly appreciated.:)
