Default Change the colour of a layer in 1 viewport

I am working on a drawing with lots of linework and text, and I want to grey out most of the background layers in the drawing, but only in 1 viewport. The other viewports won't have anywhere near as much text. Is this possible? Or do I have to duplicate the layers and grey them?

    Any help would be great

You can freeze layers in just the viewport but I don't know that you can gray them out without duplicating them.

We used to do this all the time in another CADD program. We would display the layers we wanted to include, then copy them and paste them into a new layer whose color was set to gray. It's best to lock the layers you copied from before pasting, so you can move the copied plan into the right position without disturbing something on the other layers.
