    Default many probs please help!

hello, i've got some annoying problems (with Autcad r14 that is!):

    1. when i copy and paste, the pasted object always seems to be inserted some distance below my original object. i'm using the .xy command so i can specify the exact points, but this doesnt seem to help. i end up having to use the move command to get it to the same x level! what am i doing wrong?

i do find though that making and inserting as a block avoids this distance problem, but copy& paste is much quicker!

    2. furthermore, when i try to explode the newly pasted object, it goes thru with the explode but the object disappears entirely! not very useful! this also happens when i try to explode inserted blocks as well

    3. when i'm insering blocks, i go to the list window and notice loads of strangely titled blocks (eg: A$C04C04C00), what are these? and is there i way i can delete them to clean up the list window?

sorry for the many questions, and many thanks for any help! cheers!

ps. cadtutor-thanks for the great .xy tip in your tutorials- except for the above instance, i've found this command to be invaluable in my drawings!

The copy and paste thing never really worked well with R14. It wasn't until the acad 2000 multiple document interface that it really started to work properly. My advice with R14 is stick to using block insertions. I know it's tedious but it works (you could always move to acad 2000 or above!).

Your disappearing block problem is a little more difficult to resolve - not sure what could be happening here.

Problem 3 is relatively easy. It sounds like you are working on a drawing supplied by others. Most likely the drawing started as a template and had a number of standard blocks already defined in the database. You can get rid of any unused block references using the PURGE command.

On number 2 it sounds like the original layer that the blocks were created on is frozen (not the layer that they were inserted on) is frozen or turned off. After you explode a block and it disapears go to your layer manager all unfreeze and turn-on all layers and see if it reappears. If so click on the items that were gone and see which layer it was on. Good luck.

correct me if im wrong on these..

1, i thought when you copy form an existing dwg, it will uses the 0,0,0 of the parent dwg as the insertions point, so when you paste it on a to your target dwg, your insertion point will be located at your entry coodinates.

2, my guess will be as the same as F7.

3, i thought the 'BLOCK' name eg. 'A$C04C04C00' are the temp name for copy/paste blocks, i always think they are randon name given to the C/P block for autoCAD to differentiate ..

    cheers

in my experience any file with $ sign is temp file and should be deleted after , although i do remember the corupt file used to be renamed by autocad to alphabetical letter and then $ sign added to them and then a series of number
