making letters

I use autocad 2008 and I need to know how to make perfect letters of the alphabet. Is there a program I can get to make them so they can be cut out on my waterjet? I need something so I can make the letters wide as needed.

Draw the text in AutoCAD. Go to the Text style dialog and change the font, the width factor and the obliquing angle. When it looks good, explode the text and work a litle bit on the resulted geometry -you will get polylines, just ready to be cut by CNC machines.

Search the forum for "exploding texts" -you will find a lot of entries.

Funny, I was just playing with this yesterday working with our logo...

We ended up making text in Adobe Illustrator, converting to outlines, then exporting it to a DWG. When in AutoCAD the outlines were splines. Worked a treat.

I use outside programs to do the sign-lettering that is cut on our CNC machines. I have used the export-to-dxf option from PlasmaCAM and Adobe Photoshop and then clean-up the .dxf files in AutoCAD before exporting to the CNC machines. You could possibly also use programs originally designed for vinyl-cutters (artistic) like the products from ArborImage ..
