ReMark
Try typing TILEMODE. The setting should be "0".

ReMark
If your icons for Model space and Layout 1 are not visible try right-clicking on the tray and enable Layout/Model. The icons should appear.
StevenMc
i normally do use them but i prefer to type all my commands is there a command to get into the layout? can one be made if there isnt? thanks for the help
ReMark
At the risk of repeating myself, on the command line type TILEMODE. If you are in model space the setting will be "1". To change over to a layout the setting must be "0". Type "0" then press the Enter key. You could write a macro using the Macro Recorder feature of 2009 and it will slightly automate the process for you. One click on your macro will do the trick. Cad64
Also, you can hold down the "Ctrl" key and hit "Page Up" and "Page Down" to scroll through the tabs.
