3d newb....first extrusion question

Drew a rectangle using Line command and then chose to extrude it a certain distance. When I went to turn it using shift key and middle mouse button it looks like the extruded faces have this grid pattern on them, how do I turn that off?

You need to have a closed polyline before you extrued to make a proper solid. If you extrude regular lines, you will get the 'grid' that you are seeing in your model.

Ditto, having gone from 2D to 3D this past year myself, I learned quickly to stop using the line command in most cases. The Rectangle command allows you to enter the size of your rectangle with a few keystrokes. Better yet, if you know how far you want to extrude the rectangle, you an use the Box command and get the whole 3D solid object in one step.

PRESSPULL is your friend. If you have a profile made of lines, polylines, circles, splines, etc. it will recognize the boundary of whatever you're trying to extrude. They don't have to be closed. It may not work in all cases, but something simple like this will be no problem for it.

Assuming you are following some sort of tutorial you will probably want to become familiar with the polyline edit command.

PE Enter

select line or arc

follow prompts on command line

j for join Enter

select remaining edges

Agreed, but I am back using 2002 and PRESSPULL was not part of that release :(
