ERROR with xref file; unable to edit some parts

When I try to edit a some selected nested parts of a ref file on my main drawing,

I get this error message: INTERNAL ERROR: !dbobji.cpp@290, and then AutoCAD crashes.

 

 

There is only one ref file on my drawing.. hopefully the issue is fairly simple but I'm pretty new to AutoCAD (Mechanical 2004), so any help would greatly be appreciated.

 

 

Thanks in advance! Let me know if you have further things I should clarify.
