NBC
It is used to access Operating System commands whilst remaining in AutoCAD - things like opening files, opening websites, etc.

JD Mather
This has been covered here many times - I search should return some examples I have posted in the future. Basically Shell is used a lot in Plastics parts where uniform thickness is desired. Try the toy car tutorial in my signature. You model as a solid block and then Shell to desired thickness removing just one or maybe a few faces. When you invoke the Shell from Ribbon (or icon) you are actually going into solidedit command. (I think NBC has been around too long - harking back to the old DOS days.) You did ask about shell "command" though.......
