how do i draw a wood /self tapping screw in 3d with autocad 2004?

i've tried a combination of extruding triangles around a helix but can't quite get it to look right (or convincing)

Extruding a triangle along a helix you will get it twisted. Unfortunately you have no control over this twist so I would recommend you an other approach. Draw tree helixes representing the top and the bottoms of a thread (passing trough the corners of the triangle). Now create two surfaces between the larger helix and the two inner ones.
Post here if you need more details.
