how to draw this...

I have an ellipse drawn in autocad. can you please tell me how to draw a perpendicular line to the ellipse through a given point on that ellipse?

One way to do it would be to offset the ellipse, and then from the given point draw a line perpendicular to the offset line.

If you can get access to AutoCAD 2011 (free trial download) you could use Geometric Constriants.

you can construct the tangent by a line from centre to given point and rotate 90 degrees

Another possible method:

Xlines support deferred object snaps, so this command sequence precedes the attached illustration.

A command macro to preset the action would be something like this:

The construction lines can be trimmed as necessary.
