    Default templates, xrefs, and paths...

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

i have searched and searched and i am just not finding the answer to this problem so please link me if this has already been discussed.

i am trying to set up templates at a new job and i want to create templates with an xref for the title block so when we start a new drawing, we use the template, save to the project file and everything is there with our title block already xref'd. my problem is, the path on the xref'd title block stays the same and is still referencing the location of the file i used when creating the template. if possible, when i save the new drawing to the project foldeer i want the xref to also move to the project file and the path to the xref to change.

does that make sense? is that even possible?

    thank you!

Try reading AutoCAD Help on "Set Paths for Temporary Xref File Copies" and "Set Paths to Referenced Drawings". If you have specific questions, comeback here and ask them.

If I understand your situation correctly, you want to bring a standard title block into each new drawing and make it part of the project. One way to do that is to bind the xref to the drawing. Typically, there is information in the title block that changes from one project to the next, which you can handle with attributes in the xref. If you bind it as a block in the new drawing, the attributes will be ready to use.

It seems simple enough to copy your template to the project folder and then xref it in. If using SSM you can specify there to use the file in any folder you want, so copy the template over and edit the properties in the SSM for that project.

You will not find a OOTB setting that will let you xref from one folder and hit save and have it copy to another folder.

Have you looked into relative pathing?
