Default Layer states don't transfer from an Xref of an Xref....

Ok, so I'm inserting a refelcted ceiling plan (RCP) into my drawing as an Xref, this RCP contains the "Base" drawing as an Xref. When I insert the RCP the layer states (on/off, frozen, etc.) of it's Xref (Base) don't transfer to my new drawing. For example, in the RCP plan, the Kitchen Equipment layer from the Base drawing Xref, is frozen, but when I insert the RCP into my drawing as an Xref the Kitchen Equipment layer becomes unfrozen. I'm not sure how AutoCad deals with Xrefs that have there own Xrefs. Are there settings for this? How can I get the RCP to be inserted with the layer states for it's Xrefs intact. TIA for any help!

In a nutshell, I create 3D models from the client's CAD files or design sketches, which I then use to produce high quality rendered images. Click on the link in my signature to view my portfolio. I'm always looking for work, so let me know if you need any renders. :)

I never allow nested xrefs in my drawings. I always insert each one individually. This saves me from having to deal with problems like this later on down the road. I can save out my layer states for each file and whenever I get an updated base, it's a snap to swap out.

It may take a little more set up time up front, but the benefits, and the lack of headaches, make the time well worth it.

I would load the two xrefs individually. This will give you full control over each file. You could keep the base xref in the RCP file, just change it's status from attached to overlay

Look into the system variable VISRETAIN. Is VISRETAIN set to 1?

The layer table, as stored in the reference drawing (xref), takes precedence. Changes made to xref-dependent layers in the current drawing are valid in the current session only and are not saved with the drawing. When the current drawing is reopened, the layer table is reloaded from the reference drawing and the current drawing reflects those settings. The layer settings affected are On, Off, Freeze, Thaw, Color, Ltype, LWeight, and PStyle (if PSTYLEPOLICY is set to 0).
