When creating a new viewport or copying another viewport it makes the last active viewport inactive, which I admit I don't know how to reactivate. Anyone know whats causing this and how to fix/prevent it?

You can have up to 64 active viewports in a single layout. Follow Dink's advice by resetting the system variable at the command line.
