nchaplin
I have had some problems with this too what I did in the end to make sure I could tell what direction things were moving was to add a pattern to the surface of the moving parts (the Cog) and you sure be able to see a little better which way it is rotating. or simply add an extrusion offset from the centre of the cog and you will be able to see which way it is rotating. I think they are moving the same way but don't have time to look at your files (it might be the effect like when your cycling a bike and it looks like you wheel is rotating backwards if you know what i mean )
DNK
I think it's an illusion as well. Add a marker to verify.
