Can you post an image of your screen so I can see your interface? I have a feeling you may have one of your selection modes active, (vertex, edge, polygon, etc.). If so, you won't be able to select anything else until you turn off the selection mode.

no need to post an image if your new to 3ds max i am guessing the reason you can't select anything is because you pressed the space bar on accident
the space bar toggles selection lock.. if this is the problem then pressing the space bar will fix it. by default it is off.

Please don't tell others to disregard my suggestions.

Hitting the Spacebar is the same thing as clicking the Lock/Unlock button at the bottom of the screen. And as amulrod stated, he has already tried that.

How to take a screenshot: http://take-a-screenshot.org/

But before you do that, just take a look at the image below. Are any of your selection buttons active? If so, just click to deactivate them and then you should be able to select other objects.

"pfft screenshot no need, disregard that, if your new then you possibly hit the spacebar on accident....continued"

You didn't have to say it. It was implied.

There is no other way to interpret that.
