Importing Surveying Points - Map 3D 2012

So for a school project we went out and collected data points, and recorded the data in Excel. The data is simply the, point number, northing, easting, altitude and description of the point (based off a made up/given point). I'd like to import these points so I can eventually make a simple contour map. Some of the points mark things like street lights, so I would like to mark them as such, and some mark the edge of a sidewalk, so I'd like to connect all of those to show the sidewalk on the map.

Map 3D should have all the tools that you need without going to outside programmes.

The OP has probably sorted their problem by now, although when capturing the survey data, depending on the instrument used (I assume you used either a GPS or a total station) you should be able to use additional codes to label features such as breaklines. Then when you setup your survey library in whatever survey program you use (Map 3D in this case), the survey library will automatically assign blocks (manholes, light poles etc), linetypes and breaklines to those codes you labelled the data when capturing it.
