Question How to Extrude a 3D Sketch?

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

Hello! I am having quite some difficulty figuring out a method to extrude a 3D sketch that I have projected onto my model. I am using Autodesk Inventor 2012 Professional (student edition).

I have attached a picture below (Dino_01.jpg) illustrating what I am trying to do. I am trying to extrude some "stripes" on the curved back of this dino food container I am playing around with.

In the past, I have attempted to use a method of extrusion (subtraction) + boundary patch + sculpt + thicken / offset, but the results where not satisfactory or uniform. This issue is probably my experience with this software. I have attached a photo of those results below as well (Dino_02.jpg).

I do not have any formal training to speak of in AI, with the majority of my knowledge coming from old youtube tutorials, or by me just messing around. Hopefully if my finances are in order for 2013, I will be enrolling for professional AI training. However, until then, any help or suggestions would be ever so appreciated!

    Thanks!

    You can't extrude a non-planar form.

What's wrong with the shapes that you've created there? If you blend the edges in to the rest of the form, it doesn't look like it would be inconsisten with the rest of your design.

Use those projected 3D sketches to Split the face of the solid.
You can then do a Thicken with Cut option and then add fillets.

    There is no such command.
Post screen shot of where you think you found this command in Autodesk Inventor.

Thanks for the response JD Mather and everybody else!

The split tool solved the issue!

    Thanks!
