linking to external blocks

i modeled a building using blocks heavily in the process. I have since had to break the model down into smaller pieces and I would like to have changes in blocks appear in these separate models. In block manager there is a way to save the blocks externally but there doesn't seem to be an option to create a link to that file in the process. Can anyone suggest a way to achieve redirecting embedded blocks to linked ones, external to the file?

for rhino right? are you sure?

i want to take my blocks and turn them into xref like things. In rhino you can maintain links with your external blocks though my blocks started as embedded. I want to export them and in the process link them to the newly exported file...
