    Default Problems with origin

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

    Hi all:
Can someone shed some light on how to deal with the origin?

I typically will use a UCS Origin, 3 Point or a Face UCS command to temporarily align my axes wherever I want them, but I am unclear what that does to the permanent location of (0,0,0). Do these commands affect the (0,0,0) forever, or if I go back to UCS World, does that reinstate the original location of the origin?

An issue that I assume is related: I don't understand why when I switch views (Top/Bot, L/R, Front/Back), my (0,0,0) does not remain constant? For example, if I am in Front view and define a polyline beginning at (0,0,0) then switch to another view and define another polyline beginning at (0,0,0), the start points of those two lines are NOT the same.

Any thoughts to clear me up here? Thanks in advance.

@JD - I don't have Dynamic UCS on. For this particular application, I don't have any 3D solids, so I don't know that it would be useful. I'm trying to get a 3D version of an existing structure, and only have centerline/elevation data right now, so what I'll end up with is a bunch of 2D floor and column line drawings but they will be spaced correctly (horiz and vert). I want to get the structure correct from so that I can set my origin in all my other drawings that are 3D models of existing equipment - then the idea would be that I can paste from (0,0,0) to (0,0,0) and drop in the equipment models in to my structural drawing and have them go where they're supposed to be. Later when I get legible drawings that I can read what steel sections were used, I can place those in.

@MSasu - What I would do with the 3D models if I needed some Face UCS would be to invoke Face UCS, draw what I needed, then invoke UCS>World to set my axes back the way they were. This may not be the correct process... I'm still trying to understand how to best handle these things.

    Thanks all

What do your UCSMAN settings say for each viewport?

I dont want to mislead you or tell you how to operate, but from my personal experience (3D modelling), it has always been best to have a consistent UCS in all your viewports (in MODEL space).

You might find that you have a setting enabled which will allow you to save/set the UCS independently for each viewport. Meaning that if you change your UCS in 1 viewport... it will not affect your UCS in any other viewports.

Let me know what your settings are (run UCSMAN command in each viewport) and you might need to make some adjustments.

My UCS settings are as follows...

Ps: from what you said about how you operate your UCS... i think we both use a similar method.

    Good luck.

@Iamsterms: Thanks for the help... I DO have the "Save UCS with viewport" checked; I will uncheck and see if this helps. All other settings the same. Thank you much!

No worries mate, just keep in mind that these settings are viewport specific. So any changes you make, you might need to make for each viewport.

    Cheers.
