    Default Edit poly tightening edges

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

    Hi,

A bit of an odd query and I think I probably know the answer but wanted to just check whether there was a better way to do this. I have this shape

    Edit poly.jpg

    Which smooths like this

    Poly smooth.jpg

I want sharp edges and I know I need to add extra edge loops to achieve this such as

    Poly edges.jpg

But I don't really want the full edge loop to carry along the rest of the shape as this causes sharp creases along these edges. Is there any way round this? The only thing I can think is to create triangles at each corner rather than quads

    poly tri.jpg

But I thought that was a bit of a no-no? I want to try and keep my model clean and correct, is there a better way to achieve this?

    Cheers
    James

You just need more geometry in order to create something like this. The attached file was created in Max 2011. You didn't mention what version of Studio Max you are using and it's not listed in your user profile, so you may or may not be able to open my file, but check it out if you can. Otherwise, here are some screenshots, with and without Turbosmooth applied.

Ok this kind of makes sense, so I just need to add more edge loops in the areas I want to tighten? I will give this a go... thanks!

Yes, you just need more geometry around those corner areas. No need to add edge loops in areas where it's not needed.
