I wanna give this membrane a thickness!

Hello!

I have a 3D geometry in .dwg format ... it is a part of an umbrella membrane structure (see the attached pic.)

This geometry is divided into litte pieces. Each piece is a '3D surface' object

I need to give this umbrella a thickness!

I tried Extrude command; Error! the surface object should be planner

I tried surface offset command as explained here

http://autocadinsider.autodesk.com/my_weblog/2010/12/offsetting-surfaces-in-autocad-2011.html

did not work cuz my object is not a planner surface nor a extruded surface

so... what to do experts?!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Surface before using THICKEN command on left. After using THICKEN command on right (now it is a solid).

Perfectttttttttttt!

I'll assume that ^ ^ ^ means you are pleased with the results. Good.

:)

What I meant by perfectttttt is that I liked your photo ;)

I tried it now

It worked with a LOFTED Surface (that you can create with LOFT command)

Unfortunatly, Did not work with my surfaces :( they are of type 3D surfaces

Thanks for your tip anyway ... waiting for more :)

Welcome to the forum. :)

How did you create the 3D Faces in your drawing?

I got those from the company that produce this kinda structures. They have used Form-Finding optimization technique to get this geometry.

Why did the company send you this drawing? What are you expected to do with it?

I've had no luck so far although I am only on my first cup of coffee. After I have my nine other cups maybe I'll be thinking clearer.

The object which you supplied in the drawing is a whole bunch of contiguous 3D Faces.

I am way out of my element working with Surfaces, Meshes & Nurbs, but as far as I know the 3D Faces in Autocad are always attached to a 3D Solid, and I

am not aware of any way to work with those which have become disenfranchised, if you will. :)

Like ReMark I had no luck with it, but I was sufficiently jacked up on fresh hot coffee, that I am unable

to blame my lack of success on something less than CRITICAL CAFFEINE MASS.

One would imagine that the program capable of this sort of work, could also export a more Autocad friendly representation.

Maybe INVENTOR could handle the entity type?

hahaha :D

Thank you for spending your coffee time on thickening my membrane ;)

I got it to make a wind simulation (CFD) on it using OpenFOAM

I tried exploding one of the faces but that failed since it is non-planar. I also tried recreating the shape of one of the faces uses a 3dpolyline, which did work, but it can't be extruded (non-planar) and when I make a copy slightly above it and try to loft it that doesn't work either. The thicken command obviously doesn't work because it is not a surface. One must be carefully with the use of terminology as it can lead to misconceptions about the nature of the object one wishes to edit.

Thank you guys!

I have tried also what you have done! no use!

I guess I am left with drawing the whole membrane again ... I will use the old one and draw over it ...

Let's see what happens,,,

Thanks again

Please answer my questions in post #13. This is funny why??

hahaha

I have answered in #15

I need to have an STL file to use it in OpenFOAM ... to deal with the geometry as an obstacle in the wind way
