You can find a tutorial here...http://www.we-r-here.com/cad/tutorials/level_4/4-7.htm about external references (xrefs).

Here is a link to another (very brief) tutorial...http://www.2learncad.com/tutorials/xref.html

For something more in-depth read Bill Fane's three part article regarding xrefs that appeared in Cadalyst magazine.

Part 1...http://www.cadalyst.com/cad/autocad/x-marks-ref-learning-curve-autocad-tutorial-6434

Part 2...http://www.cadalyst.com/cad/autocad/clipping-right-along-with-xrefs-learning-curve-autocad-tutorial-6452

Part 3...http://www.cadalyst.com/cad/autocad/a-stroll-down-xref-path-learning-curve-autocad-tutorial-6463

You can find many video tutorials on line as well with a simple search.

There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube. This one's not to bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qfAEyZ557I.

In a nut shell xref's allow to insert the contents of one model file into another without actually copying the data in. This helps keep the file sizes down. It also means you can use a model file as a base for multiple models so if you update the base model it will automatically update the other models.

As an example I use AutoCAD for designing housing estates. I xref the survey into my site model as a base.

I would suggest you watch one of the youtube videos then come back with any specific questions.
