Problem Flowing along Surface

I have a 3d pattern in the shape of a triangle I wish to flow along a surface with a 2 direction curve. The 3d surface is basically a triangle with its 3 points coming down to meet the ground. I created it my taking a sphere, and trimming it using an extruded equilateral triangle.

When I attempt to flow my 3d pattern, I follow the command (select the base surface, then the target). Something interesting happens however. The 3d pattern is flowed not on the curved triangular surface, but on an invisible surface that was once parted of the sphere but had been trimmed away. As I type this, I realize I did not check that the UV directions were matching. Perhaps that was the problem.
