tzframpton
Apple products are lacking for native OS CAD applications. Your choices will be very small unless you run Windows. Also note that if you sign up for any type of class for learning design or engineering related education, your school/college email address can be used to download and use the educational versions of Autodesk software. These versions are the full versions and completely unlocked, with certain watermarks indicating it's educational use only.
SLW210
Look at FREECAD (open source), Sketchup, Vectorworks, ArchiCAD and AutoCAD for Mac. I believe Archicad has free student software also, maybe some others.
f700es
Be aware that the Macbook Air only comes with the Intel HD4000 video solution which is not really suited to high end CAD programs. AutoCAD in 2D mode will be fine but 3D performance will be lacking. SketchUp will work but large models might show the Macbook Air's video weakness. You will have to go with SketchUp Pro as it is the only way to get DWG in and out of SketchUp these days but you do get their layout program as well. DraftSight is a free 2D cad program that has an OSX version (basically an AutoCAD LT like clone). With these 2 programs you should be able to do just about what ever you need.
