Why enable Mechanical Structure environment?

I've been using AutoCAD Mechanical for over a half-year now and I still don't understand what the Mechanical Structure environment is supposed to bring to the table.

http://exchange.autodesk.com/autocadmechanical/enu/online-help/AMECH_PP/2012/ENU/pages/WS1a9193826455f5ffb16f5f10e880898df-5a4f.htm

The above help summary is quite vague when it says "to take advantage of the productivity gains of mechanical structure".

What gains? What types of commands require the "STRUCT" button to be enabled? Am I missing out by not (knowingly) making use of these capabilities? Does anyone here use it?

It's hard to find info on this stuff on the net that doesn't just bring up more questions than answers.
