3rdElle
FAST, FAST and SUPER FAST! I need to here it from the CAD Pros on what desktop to get. I have LG monitor 21" that I am happy with but most importantly don't want to waste it. I am looking to purchase just desktop that is just about the best for AutoCAD, windows 8 suite, possible a CAFM program and some light photo editing. BTW ... if using BIM, will this require additional/different requirements, if so please tell. Also, I walk into the Apple store from time to time because their products are so cool looking. Price is high as we know, but is the extra really paying for a better machine? EXTREMELY APPRECIATIVE, Lisette

ReMark
It sounds like money is no object. Correct? Six core Intel Xeon E5-1650 3.2GHz - 10MB cache. 32GB DDR-3 1600 ECC RAM. nVidia GeForce GTX Titan 6GB DDR5 PCIe graphics card. Corsair Neutron Series 240GB solid state drive as the main drive and a Velociraptor 1TB 10,000 rpm platter drive for data backup. Plus whatever assortment of optical drives that you would feel comfortable with. A good power supply like a 1000W Cooler Master Silent Pro. Running Win8-Pro 64-bit OS. Probably a wireless 3D mouse by LogiTech and a wireless keyboard too. Toss the 21" monitor and get two 27" LCD widescreen monitors.

How about something from XI computers?

ReMark
I just saw an article yesterday about a computer that is based on the new Haswell chip. It was very reasonably priced at $1600. I'll see if I can find it and post a link.
f700es
Why on earth would you get a Mac and then run AutoDesk BIM software on it? Take the added cost of a Mac box and then add on the cost of buying Windows8 for it is just not logical. OK now I can get off my soap-box As Remark said the new 4th gen Intel cpus are out now and I would focus on them. I am not sold on the performance of Xeons over the cost savings of going with an i7 system.
Handiman
That certainly sounds like a fun set-up! How about something from XI computers? I did a custom build but it was based off the XI Computers quote, I was looking at systems and had built many quotes from XI and Boxx and some others and the XI was always the best price. But I needed to build a great setup but in pieces and so I used the XI parts from the quote and it has worked great. By from them and save yourself the time of doing it yourself. Good Luck
ReMark
Here is the link I promised. The computer is a MicroFlex 47B based on an 3.5GHz Intel Core i7-4770k. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2040520/review-the-microflex-47b-delivers-outstanding-haswell-powered-performance-at-a-reasonable-price.html
