Is it possible to somehow combine an assembly done in metric units with one done in imperial units or is it a case of "the twain shall never meet"?

Could be, but I'm not in front of the CAD just now so just a punt. The CAD database is 'unit-less' at some base level and the usual '.dwg' setup/config fixes some relative scale for displaying mm/inch/furlongs in the measurement system (Dims etc). Again I'm guessing but exporting say the imperial part of the assembly as a STEP/SAT/IGES file may allow you to re-set the units tag to metric in the file header (of the STEP/SAT/IGES) and then....maybe MDT will import the 'tweaked' file into the metric assembly dwg! You would need to re-scale the 'tweaked' bits accordingly. STEP would be my choice as you would at least retain the individual solids parts.
