Default Topic of Discussion: Dim Styles...

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

I was just wondering how you all set your dimension styles, or how you dimension something in general. I'm starting this thread so that maybe i might learn something from someone else's suggestions.

Okay, here is what i do, i have all my dim styles saved in my template for the scale of my viewports in Paper Space. as you can see in the image below i have all the ones i use saved, so whenever i draw something or import a block, i select the dimensions and easily set the style, or preset the style i'll be using after knowing what scale it will be. all it is, is simply copying the Standard and setting the "Use Overall Scale" under the 'Fit' tab by dividing the scale by 12. i learned this back in college..... Is this the best way to do it? anybody else have their own personal way about this?

    im the same, but different............

Same, as having my dimension styles set up in my template file.

Different, i use paperspace for all of my dimensions, and buy using DIMASSOC set to 2, sorts out the scale thing.

I have mine set up to an engineering standard AS1100 [ Australian Standard]
where the text.space & arrow size is 2.5mm

i also have styles that have arrows and extensions removed so you only see the text. this is also handy for a text override for things like "equal" and "check on site"

yeah see i dimension everything in model space. mostly because i have lots of blocks that i use over and over, but also it gets confusing in paperspace for my type of layouts and what not.

i've never heard of the DIMASSOC system variable, ima have to F1 on that one. lol

    G'Day Styk,

I have only one dimension style set up for everything. I also have a command alias...... DS, *DIMSCALE
So any time I need to change the text scale I just type DS and enter the new scale (e.g. 0.5 for 1:500).
Saves setting up multiple dimension styles.

Think im similar to you Styk....

All dims in Model space - just pick whatever scale i want to suit the viewport - pretty simple, any more scales i want i just create new to whatever scale and change under the FIT tab in the 'scale for dimension features' - use overall scale of: XXX change this part to whatever the new scale is.

I too have it set up with multiple dim styles based on the different scales I use. I have the dim styles in a template, but I also created a LISP to recreate the dimstyles if I should happen to do a purge and then need a didfferent scale. I also have a LISP to recreate my standard layers for the same reason. I know I can just drag them in from the design center, but the LISP is soo much faster.

One difference I did notice, I have different settings for each dimstyle for diameter, radius and angle dimensions. Normally my dim text is aligned to the dimension line, but I wanted the text for diameters, radius and angles to always be horizontal.

Cool, glad to know that i'm somewhat on the right track as is everyone else. it's ALWAYS nice to get a second opinion about things like this. in fact, i think this is the best learning tool, posting a topic with the sole intentions of second opinions on how or why. kinda like 2 heads are better than one, or something along the same lines... lol - plus i've already learned a few things already, like Alan's DIMSCALE method.

Walking hand in hand AND wearing the same shoes on this one. Our template has them, but they also exist as a seperate block to be inserted if they were purged.

We name our dim layers A-ANNO-DIMS and then a scale. 1/8"=1'-0" would be A-ANNO-DIMS-1-8, maybe with CLNG or DEMO as well. We have one base floor plan as the base for reflected ceiling, floor, demo, renovation, and they will be shown at more than one scale in the drawings. So we do filters for things like *1-8*, and select all to freeze all the layers meant for various 1/8 scale drawings. Do *1-4* to turn all the 1/4 stuff on. *clng* will let you turn on or off al the reflected ceiling plan stuff. etc

We're consistant with our layers across projects, and we have set layer states we can import to switch back and for to what we need. We end up with a 100 layers, but we control them rather well

yeah i can see you guys are very precise with your dim style settings haha.... very nice.

so when you mean you have it saved as blocks, how do you have that set up? can't you just import in as DIMSTYLES through the Design Center or am i missing something?
