Can I install Inventor (Student) on drive other than 'C'?

I am a bit tight for space on 'C' drive but I have tons of room on 'E'.

I tried installing Inventor Student Edition on 'E' but the installer put a large amount of the program on 'C' anyway. Is there any way I can install the application only on 'E' Drive?

A large chunk of the files will need to be installed on the C:drive for it to install correctly, I would suggest you move as much as you can over to the E drive (movies, photos etc) to free up the C drive space.

I have a feeling that there are files that must be installed on the boot disk. Not sure.

What does the boot disc have to do with this?

ReMark - there are a lot of those files on 'C' - 658MB in the 'c:\Autodesk' folder

Thanks, but, unfortunately, I have already done that.

I don't think you need anything at C:\Autodesk

This is commonly where the download install files are automatically extracted to. (think of these like a removable DVD)

You can move them to anywhere you want. (in fact I recommend that you burn a back-up as the download process takes a long time if you ever have to repeat)

Start the setup.exe and the program will be (must be) installed to C:\Programs Files\Autodesk and a couple of other locations.

I see a lot of people with the "program" on their machines 3 times.

1. The compressed download

2. The extracted install files

3. The installed program files.

1 and 2 are not required on the boot disk.

How do I know what 1 and 2 look like?

BTW: I have 11.4GB of Autodesk on E and 8.17GB on C. Isn't that a bit excessive?

This on E

c:\rick\desktop\autodesk_inventor_Installation-e.gif

This on C

c:\rick\desktop\autodesk_inventor_Installation-c.gif

Just bye-the-bye - I think I have a great mess :(

I don't see why a user could not install Inventor to a different drive as long as the path to the files is adjusted accordingly.

Tell me what you think a boot disk is.

AFAIK it must be installed on boot disk.

Compressed download files (these can be anywhere).

These can be deleted after extraction.

Inventor Download.PNG

Folder containing the install files (this is essentially the same as a DVD) can be anywhere - but typically default extraction to C:\Autodesk

These can be deleted after installation complete.

Install Folder.png

The actual required files C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2014

Inventor Program Files.png

So the actual install is less than 4 Gig. (without Content Center)

This is for Inventor Professional - you size might be different.

If you choose to install Content Center - there are some additional files installed in another location.

I thought that "has to be installed in the root drive" went the way of the dodo. Oh well....that's AutoDesk for you.

I could understand if AutoDesk said the installation files had to be located on C:\ drive but the program files too? Still seems odd.

See post #7, #13, and #14. Your post is self contradicting. The "C:\ drive", AKA root, AKA boot drive has everything to do with it.

Tell me what you think a boot disk is.

A boot disc is a CD (used to be a floppy back in the dim darks) used to allow bootup when the files on the hard drive are kaput.

Yes, you can install Inventor to a location other than your boot drive. It will not, however, install EVERYTHING to that other drive. There are certain components and files that will always be installed to the boot drive.
