Which verison of AutoCAD do I need?

I have used AutoCAD in the past to design mechanical parts. For my new position, I will be drawing site plans: laying out buildings, drawing metes and bounds (N 88d57'27"E 258.25'), importing streets in shx files, and hopefully making 3D renderings of fairly simple (rectangular) buildings.

I have a trial version of AutoCAD Architect, but it seems that Architect has trouble importing drawings from shx files.

Which version of AutoCAD would work best for this?

That "version" still has the plain version of AutoCAD included. Go to Add/Remove programs and you can edit the installation to include the plain AutoCAD profile. This process should be self explanatory once you click the application and click "Uninstall/Change" and it will prompt you to make the changes you need.
