well it depends on your area of work.
it can all be done in AutoCAD '07 but other programs has it's benefits. it's the fine tuning of the job or skills that makes it a requirement, in my opinion.

Land Desktop ceased to exist last year....it was replaced with AutoCad Map 3D. In fact Land Desktop was actually Map with extra tools added.![]()

Actually, Alan, that's not true. Autodesk's current "Infrastructure" products include Civil 3D, Land Desktop, Map 3d, and a bunch more you can see here.

I don't know about USA, but here in Australia all Land Desktop licenses on maintenance were replaced last year with Map 3D 2006, because Land Desktop was finishing. Civil 3D exists, one of the blokes here uses it.![]()
