Inserting second and subequent parts into an assembly

Greetings all!

When I insert first part into an assembly, it is put into the zero of absolute coordinate system and grounded. When I insert second and subequent parts into the same assembly, they are asking for the alignment.

Is it possible to insert all parts into an assemby the same way as the first one - without aligning them manually, just into the the zero?

Why would you want all parts in the same location?

Were they modeled in different locations, relative to XYZ? (this is called body positition)

In the real would - how would you assembly parts?

Experiment with the Assembly Constraints (they work like real world assembly of parts.

Hello JD!

There are plenty of scenarios where parts need to be placed like that. One of them is exactly like you said - they are modeled in different locations relative to XYZ. Also, when you utilise advanced design strategies like top-down modeling, assembly is not always a product electronic mock-up assembly, it well may be utility assembly like control structure.

Is it possible to place all parts like the first part?

Hello JD!

One of them is exactly like you said - they are modeled in different locations relative to XYZ. ...

I am not sure when these tools were added, but here are a two techniques assuming that the parts are modeled in (body position) relative to a single origin.

For a single part - simply place anywhere in the screen and then right click on the part and select iProperties.

On the Occurrence tab set the origin X,Y,Z positions to zero (the part itself will be placed in reference to where it was relative to the origin).

In later versions there were two tools to automate this process that do not require you to type in 0,0,0

- go to the Productivity tab and select the tool and then the part(s).

The first tool does exactly what you describe. Places any part relative to the modeled origin.

The second tool does what you describe "after-the-fact" (the parts are already in the assembly, move them relative to their modeled origins) and can be used selecting multiple components.

Before these Productivity Tools were added to Inventor, there was a 3rd party add-in to do the same thing (I think it was free, but don't remember).
