? Derive an Assembly meaning

Start new part file.

Derive Component and select the assembly file.

Places an associative copy of the assembly into a single part file.

Unless the link is Suppressed or Broken, any changes made to the original parts or assembly are also reflected in the Derived Component.

Great way to keep control of the models, the derived part can be mirrored and scaled up and down in size great for tool modelling, was also used to turn an assembly into a part file so you could then FEA the model before the days of assembly FEA that is.

What does it mean to derive an assembly?

Consider reading up on the development concept of "inheritance" as it is used for various Types (i.e., Classes) of Objects in all Autodesk products.

Cheers
