Tyke
Basically when a layer is just turned off all the objects on that layer cannot be seen but they can still be manipulated by some commands. For example, Ctrl+A will select all entities that are visible AND all entities that are on layers that are just turned off and a subsequent delete command will delete all of the selected entities. So will have deleted entities that were on the turned off layers. Whereas when a layer is frozen non of the entities on that layer are visible or can be manipulated by a command. That's the basic difference and I would suggest freezing a layer and not just turning it off, until you have gained more experience with AutoCAD. Check out the help files for a more detailed explanation and find out some further differences between freezing and turning off layers.
