Object becomes distorted after applying textures

Hello,

I am using 3ds 2015 on a Dell running Windows 8.1 (6GB RAM, 1.9 GHz). I am extremely new to 3ds (like just downloaded four days ago). I have a problem with an object becoming distorted after applying textures to it. The object is from an older 3ds file I downloaded.

Before texturing the object looks like this:

Smooth surface, great pillow form. After I apply a texture, it turns into this:

Lines appear, the tiling is off, and there is a section that is discolored as well as distorted. I'm guessing the problem is something inherent to the object. I've searched for a solution and tried to use the smooth modifier after converting to polygon, but that hasn't had any affect. Anyone have any ideas? Im hoping for a point and click solution, but am willing to dig in with good directions.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

It looks like your pillow does not have UVW coordinates, or your texture is not tileable. Unfortunately, this is not just a point and click situation.

This is a rather old tutorial, but it will at least give you the basics about what a UVW map is and why you need it: http://waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html

Tileable textures are important so you don't get those seams you're seeing on the pillow. There are lots of tutorials online that discuss how to create seamless and tileable textures: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=tileable+textures+tutorial

Thanks for the info! I will check out the UVW mapping and search about tileable textures. Hopefully that solves the problem and I can report back within a week.

Thanks again!

It was the UVW mapping! I followed the directions on that tutorial using my pillows, and they came out wonderful!

They're still a little blocky around the bottoms, but they won't be upclose in the scene so you can't really tell.

Thank you so much. I'm still checking out the tutorials for the tileable materials.

Thanks again!

Looks good and I'm glad you understand now about mapping. I thought I would let you know about a free program that is useful for making things like pillows and doonas etc. Its called Sculptris. If you google the name you will find the free download. I think from memory it was made my Pixar
