How to xclip and External Reference with an image xref'd into the original

Hey folks:

I've got a drawing that has an image xref'd into it as a background. I've got another drawing that xref's this whole drawing into it and I want to XCLIP it, but that only clips the geometry that I've drawn, not the image. I can REFEDIT and IMAGECLIP the image within the original file, but then of course it saves the clip back to the original which I don't want.

If it helps explain, I've got a survey drawing with an aerial image XREF'd 'under' it as one drawing. Then, I've got another drawing with a bunch of other junk on it that XREFs this survey drawing.

So... how can I clip an image like this? Or should I try to handle this a different way. I guess I could just paste the .jpg into the survey but I feel like the drawings get big and slow that way.
