Site Survey Advice

I have been asked to draw a proposed entrance which is to be cut into a bank

The drawing entails representing the levels on a sectional view.

What is the simplest way to take a number of levels. Can it be done using

GPS technology?

Because GPS technology uses signals from satellites, the elevation is the least accurate component of the x, y, z coordinate.

To my mind the simplest and cheapest way would be to use a level instrument with a level staff.

The next expensive way would be to use a total station, and the most expensive way would be to use GPS technology, which does not work under trees (you have to be able to see the horizon).

You could get some Ordnance Survey digital mapping (accurate to +/- one metre), and use that as a base map.

Make sure whatever way you go, for the sides allow sufficient for batter slopes in a cut situation say at least 5x the height. GPS say +-50mm if this is ok and no trees then quickest, but if you use your fishing GPS its +- 15m for x,y.

Just as a guide here a day say $1,000 a simple job may be less, problem is travel time and setup time, 1 hr surveying, 1/2 hour setup/pack x 2, travel 1/2hr x 2, process time 1 hr etc so a min 4 hours is about right as a charge out.
