Hi

I am trying to save a drawing file as a template or .dwt file but when i hit save it get an error message saying invalid file name.

I have definitely saved dwt files before but i have no idea why it wont allow me to do it now. I have tried to use different file names but have the same result

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

Can you save it as a DWG? you can rename a DWG to a DWT afterwards.

Besides it actually being a invalid file name (no points, commas or such likes?) and you trying to save it to a location you can save to - I have no idea why it would not work.

Hi Tiger

thanks for your reply, I would try to change the file type but for some reason my new laptop on Windows 7 (I so miss XP) does not show the file extensions after the file name i.e. drawing1.dwg.... instead it just has columns along the top saying file name, date modified, file type etc.

Windows 7 Explorer does not display "known" file types unless the user specifies that option.

To show file name extensions in Windows Explorer, follow these steps:

For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008

  1. Start Windows Explorer, you can do this by opening up any folder.
  2. Click Organize.
  3. Click Folder and search options.
  4. Click the View tab.
  5. Scroll down until you notice Hide extensions for known file types, un-check this line by clicking the check box.
Note To hide file name extensions, check this line.
  6. Click OK
