Hello;

I am new to civil 3d

What is civil 3d?

Is it additional merged Program linked to AutoCAD for 3d works

In Autocad product still there is no command for copytolayouts

It's a lisp routine, like the way we are using additional many type of custom programs for AutoCAD

Same way is there any custom programs for civil 3d

Civil 3D is a vertical product to AutoCAD, meaning it uses AutoCAD as its base. So everything you can do in AutoCAD, you can do i Civil. There are custom programs for Civil 3D, and if you have customizations and/or Lisps that you use in AutoCAD, they will work in Civil 3D.

As to what Civil 3D is, it's a 3D (with caveats) modelling program mainly for road and wastewater design.

What version of AutoCAD and what version of Civil 3D?

Think of Civil 3D as AutoCAD plus some stuff. In fact, if you are using Civil 3D you can give the MENU command, select acad.CUIX and you now have AutoCAD! To get back to the AutoCAD user interface type MENU again and select C3D.cuix. So yes, programs that run with AutoCAD will work with Civil 3D but not necessarily vice versa as there are features in Civil 3D that are not in plain AutoCAD and if your program references those feature they will not work in a pure AutoCAD installation.

In fact, if you are using Civil 3D you can give the MENU command, select acad.CUIX and you now have AutoCAD!

You _can_ do that, but Civil 3D comes with a "Run Civil 3D as AutoCAD", which avoids the messy menu swapping.

Firstly, welcome to the world of Civil 3D.

Building on others' apt comments; think of Civil 3D as an onion - Civil 3D is built on top of Map 3D, which itself is built on top of AutoCAD - so anything that works in the 'lesser' platforms of both Map 3D, and 'vanilla' AutoCAD, also work in Civil 3D.

That said, as a result, Civil 3D also supports all of 'vanilla' AutoCAD's native APIs, provided compiled code is compiled for the same Framework, employs the correct Assembly References, etc.

Civil 3D also provides myriad APIs of its own, appropriately, for the various new Typed Objects (Classes) Civil 3D natively implements as well, such as Alignments, Surfaces, COGO Points, Profiles, Profile Views, etc.

There are a few commands that are part of AutoCAD MAP that are not enabled in Civil 3D. I believe it's limited to MAP functionality, where Civil 3D contains a better different version of, such as COGO/Survey oriented commands.

For example: Try the commands MAPCOGO or MAPCGSETUP in Civil 3D.

Perhaps I applied the aforementioned 'with caveats' comment too liberally in posting my own.

Correct; RTM Map 3D is a different build of acad.exe than AutoCAD (same version), let alone Civil 3D. I know one stickler who shall not be named (cadtag, ehhehehehe) for identifying such with each release, which is more stable and the like.... Some functionality presents incompatibility issues, etc.

In any event, good clarification, RK - I certainly wouldn't want to confuse, or worse, mislead someone - just making generalizations.

We run a 3rd party program that takes advantage of CIV3d capabilities such as input survey data, surface modelling and then autocad functions like producing plans for layouts, cross & long sections. It runs all my lisp and vba developed over 30 years.

Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with what a generalization _actually_ is then ....
