I just loaded 2014 MEP on a new laptop w/ windows 8... my F keys do wondows things

and not acad things. is there a variable for that? inherent bug perhaps?

It's not a bug in AutoCAD MEP. You probably hit a button on your keyboard that disabled the normal function of those keys.

ThinkPad. I don't want to disable throught the bios... just want them available in acad.

Did you try pressing the Fn key PLUS the function key while in AutoCAD MEP?

The other option would be to enter the BIOS and basically swap the how the function and media keys work. It should be relatively easy to do.

Why not? They won't be disabled just toggled.

Maybe he is afraid he'll mess something up and his laptop won't work. Normally edits to a bios are not saved unless the user makes a deliberate choice to do so.
