MarkFlayler
Hold the CTRL key down when you are on the object you want. This will filter the selection to only that object and will not jump around.

MarkFlayler
I'm not having any trouble with it on my end. What version of Inventor are you using? I know 2014 the Joint command was a little rough yet. In 2016 I can select the profile just fine and they even opened it up to allow to connect to Sketch objects. You might try adding a sketched point at the center if you are using a newer version and having trouble selecting it.
