Override wallstyle colors in xref "child" drawing

AutoCAD Architecture 2015

I have a base plan with both existing walls and new walls (remodel of existing building). The existing walls are shown with no hatch and color is set to be bylayer. New walls are shown with components of specific colors...different color for shrinkwrap and hatch...to help them "pop" (using ctb).

For one of my sheets, I need to xref this base but also subdue all linework to color 252, so I've changed all the xref layers to 252 in the "child" drawing. The existing walls set to bylayer work as they should. But, understandably, the new walls that are designed in the base with specific colors do not change when I modify the xref layer in the "child" drawing.

Is there a way to somehow override colors of AEC objects in the "child" drawing, while maintaining the original settings in the base file?

Thanks.
