Trevit
Not done much AutoCAD for a while, but have a need to come back ot it now. Does anyone know if it's possible to redefine a block in a drawing with one from a webpage? For example it's possible to insert the file that is here: http://www.arcat.com/details/mielepro/11600108.dwg using the -INSERT command: Command: -insert Enter block name or [?] : http://www.arcat.com/details/mielepro/11600108.dwg But if I try redefining an existing block in a drawing, I get an 'invalid filename' error: Command: -INSERT Enter block name or [?] : Sink01=http://www.arcat.com/details/mielepro/11600108.dwg Block "Sink01" already exists. Redefine it? [Yes/No] : y *Invalid* Any help much appreciated.
RobDraw
My guess is that the block was created with a newer version of AutoCAD than the one you are using. Can you open the block file?
Trevit
Yes. This works fine: Command: -insert Enter block name or [?] : http://www.arcat.com/details/mielepro/11600108.dwg Can you let me know if this works for you... Command: -INSERT Enter block name or [?] : NameOfAnExistingBLockInCurrentDrawing=http://www.arcat.com/details/mielepro/11600108.dwg Block "NameOfAnExistingBLockInCurrentDrawing" already exists. Redefine it? [Yes/No] : y Edited February 8, 2016 by Trevit
RobDraw
Sorry, but I misunderstood your OP. I won't try what you are suggesting. I don't know if it is even possible to insert a block using a link. If it is, I would need to be absolutely certain the block is safe. Trevit
After some more digging I reckon I'll have to download the file first using vla-GetRemoteFile: http://forums.augi.com/archive/index.php/t-127623.html and then insert it. jagwinn
Download and open the drawing in your AutoCAD; Open the drawing you are wanting to insert the block into; Open DESIGN CENTER; In Design Center open the downloaded drawing and click on BLOCKS; Find the block you want and drag it into the target drawing (the drawing you want to use it in); You can then modify and wblock a new rendition of what you desire in this block; Name it something different, then purge the original block out of the drawing.
