Converting Units of Measurement

Hi all!

I'm working on drawing a railroad spur in AutoCAD 2011. I had an archaeologist get the measurements for me and unfortunately, she measured in units of 10 (i.e. 1 foot = 10 units so each "unit" = 1 1/4"

I'm wondering if there's a way in CAD to automatically convert these units. If I could enter 1 and have it come out automatically as 1 1/4" so that I don't have to convert every single measurement.

Any chance she actually used decimal feet and inches?

Unfortunately no

She drew everything "to scale" on 10x10 grid paper. So for example, one railroad tie was drawn as being 4 units wide, which would technically equal 5 inches (since each unit = 1 1/5"). Does that make sense?

People don't usually make up their own unit system. I'd be willing to bet that it is decimal feet and 1 unit actually equals 1.2 inches. Especially since 10 units equals 1 foot, as stated in your OP.

I suppose that could be the case, I'll have a chat with her later and see if this is what she did. If this is the case, do I just convert each measurement individually, or is there a way for CAD to do that for me? For example, if a tie is .4 units, would I need to convert that to 4.75" and so on? Or is there an easier way to do this? Thanks for all the help!

Set your units to decimal feet and just input the values as they are.

unless I've missed the point I would draw everything full size in "units" as measured and then scale the finished drawing by 1.25

Scale the Archeologist's drawing to full size by Scale>Reference of a known distance.
