ReMark
I think originally it stood for "Limited".
rkmcswain
Here is a copy of the press release from the initial launch (Nov 2, 1993), and there is no mention of it. I wonder if John Lynch would tell us today, 22+ years later?
TheCADnoob
the jury is in... from mutiple reliable sources it mean: Limited, Lite and Lap Top http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?49349-What-is-meaning-of-quot-LT-quot-in-the-phrase-quot-AutoCad-LT-quot https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-lt-general-discussion/what-does-the-lt-stands-for/td-p/921766 http://www.draftsperson.net/index.php?title=AutoCAD
steven-g
I once read somewhere that LT originally was concieved to enable the up and coming LapTop market to allow users the ability to have a cut down version of the program to use on site, so they disabled some of the more mathematical intense options from the full version (then laptop processors couldn't handel the power needed). Though LT can view 3D models the creation and editing functions are some of the more obvious parts that went. Up to the last minute before release LT was going to have LISP but eventually that was disabled as well, along with other "programming" options. Another thing that hung in the balance was dimensioning. It was only later that the LT commonly came to represent Limited or Lite. There is a nice history of Autocad in general on John Walkers website https://www.fourmilab.ch/autofile/

RobDraw
I have not seen anything from AutoDesk that definitively says it stands for anything. As far as I can tell, according to AutoDesk, it is LT and nothing more than that.

TheCADnoob
Limited Technology I fielded it at Answer Day and "Limited Technology" seems to be the only source-able answer. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-2013-2014-2015-2016-2017/answer-day-what-does-lt-mean/td-p/6333307
