Exclamation What am I doing wrong?! DDE w/ Continuing Dims

Registered forum members do not see this ad.

This is making me nuts. I'm sure I'm clicking when I should be typing or vise versa. I'm not a beginner, but this might be a beginner question.....

I have an empty wall, and I'm marking off certain sections.
    3', then 2'6", then 1'8", etc, etc.

    I do a dim linear:
pick point, then ortho over, type "3'", enter.
For the following dims, I try to do dim continue
ortho over, type 2'6", enter, but it always gives me a strange dimension. Certainly not 2'6". What the heck is going on?

I realize that normally when you are dim'ing, you are measuring things that are already there. Is there a way to make this work without drawing construction lines, dim'ing them and then erasing them?

    TIA!

In a nutshell, I create 3D models from the client's CAD files or design sketches, which I then use to produce high quality rendered images. Click on the link in my signature to view my portfolio. I'm always looking for work, so let me know if you need any renders. :)

    Default Node Osnap

You could place your first 3' dimension as you did. For the next dimension, start the DIMLIN command, then use your NODE Osnap to set the first extension line origin, ortho over and type 2'-6". Do the same for the 3rd dimension, etc.

I still don't get it. My units are fine. I gave up and just drew several line segments and QDIMed 'em and then deleted my line.

I can use the DIMCONTINUE if I have something to snap to, but not if I'm just typing in the distance.

    Oh well.
    Thanks for playing.
